TCG Meta Report: September 2022
With Power of the Elements Format in full swing, two decks have emerged as the top dogs in Spright and Tearlaments. Despite the success each deck strategy has seen thus far, there are other decks not far below, able to achieve worthwhile results events with admirable frequency. This is a far cry from the same format that occurred in the OCG which saw the Spright strategy achieve tier 0, rendering all other strategies effectively obsolete. Among the expected competitive decks, there have also been unpredictable placements using uncommon strategies such as Mystic Mine Burn. Read on to see how the TCG meta is shaping up and what deck lists are looking like!
Top Decks
Despite some variety in decks achieving competitive success, the meta is still comprised of two decks to beat with others comfortably below.
Tearlaments
Tearalements saw immediate success following its release in the TCG in Power of the Elements, more so than in OCG formats where Spright was more dominant. Centered around performing Fusion Summons by sending Tearlaments monsters to the GY, the deck established itself as not only the deck to beat in the TCG, but a deck that had a lot of versatility with other engines which has been seen following YCS Niagra. With pure deck lists like Cristian Urena's Top 4 showing the strength of the deck without outside assistance, the Danger! engine saw more usage overall, with certain players including Pakawat Pamornsut and Dominic Couch also utilizing the Spright and P.U.N.K. engines in their topping lists.
What came as a surprise was the 1st place winner of the YCS Niagra Giant Card tournament, where Steven Trifunoski claimed victory utilizing a Scareclaw engine in his Danger! Tearlaments deck. Despite seeing little play previously, Steven incorportated the Scareclaws as a simple way to gain advantage and also facilitate the Tearlaments' effects by destroying them with a Loading... Synchro Summoned using Loading....

After being the champion of the tier 0 OCG format, Spright was hailed as the deck to beat when released in the TCG set Power of the Elements, but eventually settled itself as a strong meta contender behind another, more powerful deck in Tearlaments. With strengths in extremely high consistency and ease of summoning, Spright arrived ready to take advantage of powerful Link-2 and Rank 2 Xyz monsters such as Loading... and Loading... which can be reused with the in-archetype Loading....
Spright has synergy with various other deck types, and this was reflected best at the Oceania TCG Championship, which saw Runick and P.U.N.K. achieve results in the top cut. YCS Niagra saw Live☆Twin Spright achieve similar success, with two decks in the top 16. Runick Spright in particular has seen large amounts of success as decks are not well equipped with the Runick game plan of banishing key cards from the deck.
