Notes & Combos
Pretty standard and straightforward but the Spellbook engine helps solve a big issue for DM in this event, which is that after your Rod and Souls resolve their effects, they just become useless bodies because there’s nothing good to link into. The extra value that you get off the draw 2 is massive. For non-engine, I think Torrential and MST (you could also go Twin Twister) are the best in this event.
Although this deck seems very linear, there are actually some cool things you can do to optimize your plays utilizing Circle’s effect to rearrange cards. If you open with only Circle + IoC, you’re in a tough position because you’re missing both Eternal Soul and DM in grave to achieve your setup, and you don’t have access to both Rod and Souls. In this situation, what you can actually do is:
- IoC search for Souls
- Summon Souls by dumping DM
- Activate Circle. Here, there’s a chance that you’ll straight up just hit Salvation or Eternal Soul, but if you don’t, you have a chance to rearrange a card that gives you access to Rod on top of your deck. Basically you get 3 chances to hit a Salvation/Eternal Soul/Soul Servant/Rod, even the Spellbook cards would help.
- Let’s say you were able to place Rod on top of your deck, you can now draw it using Souls by sending a S/T
- Summon Rod to search Salvation
- Salvation set Eternal Soul
- Souls + Rod into Crowley
See how you actually have a pretty good chance of getting the ball rolling by playing optimally off even off of a bad hand?
This event though… I think the card pool was quite poorly designed. You're allowed so few options for hand traps and board breakers when a deck like D/D can make a board with 3 interruptions/negations going first. How does that make any sense? It’s funny when the overall power level of decks are way lower than standard play, but you’re actually at a greater disadvantage when you lose the coin toss.
